The work
You'll train under a journeyperson technician installing, testing, servicing, and maintaining systems that transmit voice, sound, video, and digital signals — for commercial, education, security, and entertainment purposes, as well as fire, life, and safety.
Voice Data Video (VDV)
VDV techs are cable pros. They run, pull, terminate, and splice cabling for everything from file servers to telephone rooms to the internet itself. If it communicates, a VDV tech probably made it possible.
Fire Life Safety (FLS)
FLS techs work on the systems that keep people safe every day: fire alarm and fire suppression, nurse call, and integrated security — all covered under NEC Article 760 and the National Fire Alarm Code.
The pay and benefits
- Starting hourly base wages range from minimum wage to $22.00 or more, depending on work type and location.
- VDV apprentices can expect to earn up to $34.00 or more per hour in their 3rd year.
- Fringe benefit package provided by your contractor — may include major medical, 401K, or cash equivalent.
- School tuition is paid by the WECA member contractor who employs you.
The schedule and where
Two-week, full-time classroom-and-lab intensives about every five to seven months, each equal to a semester. Offered at our Sacramento Region (Rancho Cordova) and San Diego facilities. See locations and hours.
