The work
As a Residential Wireman apprentice, you work under the direct supervision of a journeyperson electrician wiring homes and small apartment buildings: electrical service, Romex and boxes, ranges and major appliances, receptacles, switches, lighting, electrical heat, and heat pumps.
Residential work moves fast, and it's everywhere — a skill set that stays in demand in every housing market in the West.
The pay and benefits
- Starting hourly base wages range from minimum wage to $21.00 or more, depending on the type of work and location.
- Residential apprentices can expect to earn up to $31.00 or more per hour in their 3rd year, depending on work type and location.
- Fringe benefit package provided by your contractor — may include major medical, 401K, or cash equivalent.
- School tuition is paid by the WECA member contractor who employs you.
The schedule
Full-time classroom training and hands-on labs for two consecutive weeks, approximately every five to seven months — each session equal to one semester. The rest of the year, you're on the job earning wages and hours.
